European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
