British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
